International Day against violence against women and the beginning of the campaign "16 days of activism against gender-based violence"

Teachers of the department support the International Campaign "16 days against violence". A.V. Cherniakova took part in the training "Countering gender-based violence, including domestic violence: why it is important and how to mobilize activities in this direction", which was organized by the NGO "La Strada – Ukraine" on November 19-20, 2020 in Kiev thanks to the support of the Government of Canada in the framework of the project "Voice of women and leadership-Ukraine", which is implemented by the Ukrainian women's foundation.

An important area of the department is the active public position of teachers and international cooperation in preventing and countering violence, discrimination, segregation and various manifestations of intolerant behavior among students from ethnic minorities. In the context of mobilizing activities in this direction, a partnership has been established with the public human rights organization "La Strada-Ukraine", which works to ensure gender equality, dialogue of peace and tolerance, prevent gender-based violence, in particular, domestic violence, counter human trafficking and ensure the rights of children and youth, contributing to the implementation of human rights standards in all spheres of society and the state.

In order to form tolerance in the process of communication in a multicultural and international educational environment, cross-cultural studios are an important area of preventive socio-cultural work with foreign students. According to the Strategy of intercultural development of the city of Sumy, its comprehensive and gradual implementation should lay the foundations for sustainable results that will contribute to the development of interethnic and intercultural cooperation between many stakeholders, preserve cultural diversity, and protect equal rights and dignity of all who live in the region.

In the context of the strategy, stages of its implementation are planned through the introduction of certain initiatives in seven areas: education (equal access to education, social cohesion through the adoption of diversity, language training of foreign citizens); business and employment (equal rights and access to involvement in the business environment); public places and administrative services (improving access to administrative services, cultural adaptation and growing trust); security and protection (improving the level of security for all national cultures, conflict resolution and anti-discrimination policy); culture and sport (cultural diversity and interculturalism); intercultural governance (social integration of national minorities and the introduction of a cross-cultural exchange network for joint mutual development and enrichment); communications and media (development of the sphere of communication and media by informing about the problems of foreigners, promoting the city as an outpost of interculturalism).

The intercultural strategy, which the Sumy public is starting to work on, provides an opportunity for each structural division or service to contribute to supporting and creating conditions for new arrivals, displaced persons or people with migration roots.

The strategy of intercultural development of the city until 2025, developed by the Department of communications and Information Policy and the NGO “Center for education throughout life” was supported by teachers of Department of language training for foreign citizens  of Sumy State University by introducing cross-cultural studios as a tool for socio-cultural integration and a center for studying the Ukrainian language, traditions, customs, cultural features, taking into account local history information. Cross-cultural studios is a university initiative covering various areas of socio-cultural and educational activities, in particular: diagnostic work, educational work using innovative learning technologies (communication trainings, master classes, design, interactive game technologies), project work, social-educational and training activities using components of non-formal education (volunteering). Therefore, training sessions for teachers, in particular knowledge and skills, will be useful in educational work with students.
