The Linguistic Center for the Slavic languages of the SSU began work on the basis of the Department of Language Training for Foreign Citizens.

Currently, the center has a first course-leaver. It is Alessandro Fiorellini from Italy, who decided to study the Russian language this summer. Yulia Klipatska, an experienced teacher, during a month introduced the Italian guest with the basics of the language.

Alessandro's review:

Hello, my name is Sante Alessandro Fiorellini and I am an Italian young professional in international relations. I decided to spend the month of August 2017 in the welcoming city of Sumy in order to have a crash course of Russian language. I consider studying Russian as an added value for my career, and, unfortunately, I never had the chance to study it at university.

Being an absolute beginner, the full-immersion method proved to be challenging at the beginning. However, in no time the more the lectures progressed, the more I started to associate instinctively verbs, nouns and prepositions with their meanings. As for the basic grammar, Russian was not necessarily difficult if you have some basis in Latin, or other case-based languages. However, vocabulary proved to be quite challenging, since most words are completely foreign for an Italian speaker!

My month was quite challenging, but fun at the same time. The staff and my professor Yulia at Sumy State University were all very nice and receptive, and it was a pleasure to be in their company. I certainly cannot speak Russian yet, but I gained a comprehensive basis that I plan to improve in the next few years.  As of now, I manage to have basic conversations and write small texts, and I had fun trying to haggle with the street vendors of the Andryvska Descent in Kyiv!
